The Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii) is a peaceful, eel-shaped freshwater bottom-dwelling fish known for its distinctive dark bands and active behaviour after lights out. It is a popular choice for planted aquariums and peaceful community tanks.
Kuhli Loaches are naturally shy and spend much of their time exploring the substrate, hiding among plants, driftwood and decorations, and searching for food. Keeping them in a group helps them feel more secure and encourages more natural behaviour.

Aquarium Setup
Kuhli Loaches prefer a well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding places. Use aquarium plants, driftwood, rocks, caves and other aquarium-safe decorations to create sheltered areas.
A soft, fine-grained substrate such as aquarium sand is recommended because Kuhli Loaches naturally burrow and search through the substrate for food. Avoid sharp or rough gravel that can damage their delicate bodies.
For a group of Kuhli Loaches, an aquarium of around 75 litres or more with adequate floor space is a good starting point. They are best kept in groups of at least 5 or 6.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 5.5–7.0
Soft to moderately soft water
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Stable, mature aquarium conditions
Stable water quality is more important than trying to maintain an exact pH value.
Feeding
Kuhli Loaches are omnivores and should be provided with sinking foods that reach the bottom of the aquarium. Suitable foods include sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and other suitable aquarium foods.
Since they are more active after the aquarium lights go off, feeding them in the evening helps ensure they receive enough food without being outcompeted by faster tank mates.
Tank Mates
Kuhli Loaches are peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful community fish such as small tetras, rasboras, gouramis and other compatible species.
Avoid aggressive or predatory fish that may harass or eat them. Providing plenty of hiding places will help Kuhli Loaches feel secure in a community aquarium.
Important Care Tips
Keep Kuhli Loaches in a group rather than individually.
Use smooth, fine substrate.
Provide plenty of hiding places.
Keep the aquarium fully cycled and maintain stable water parameters.
Feed sinking foods, preferably after lights out.
Use a pre-filter sponge on filter intakes where necessary to prevent fish from entering the intake.
Avoid sudden changes in water temperature or chemistry.
Kuhli Loaches are a fascinating addition to planted and community aquariums, especially for aquarists who enjoy unusual and peaceful bottom-dwelling fish.
